The INSTI Rapid Detection HIV Self Test is a single-use, rapid, at-home screening test that detects antibodies to HIV type 1 (HIV-1) and type 2 (HIV-2). The INSTI test is a qualitative, flow-through, in vitro immunoassay that allows for a preliminary screening for HIV infection using just one drop of blood (approximately 50 μL) collected from the fingertip , without the need for specialized training.

HIV – what is it?

HIV ( Human Immunodeficiency Virus ) is a human immunodeficiency virus responsible for the development of AIDS ( Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Infection can occur through sexual contact, use of contaminated injection equipment, during childbirth, or exposure to infected secretions or tissues. Initial symptoms of infection are often vague, so early detection of the virus allows for early initiation of antiretroviral treatment, which limits the virus's multiplication in the body and allows the patient to function normally. Currently, a complete cure for HIV is not possible.

How does the INSTI HIV home test work?

The INSTI test is a rapid qualitative test for detecting IgG and IgM antibodies, which are produced as a result of the body's immune reaction after contact with HIV-1 and HIV-2.

The test device consists of a synthetic membrane in a plastic container. One part of the membrane contains recombinant HIV proteins that capture HIV antibodies (test dot). The membrane also has a control dot that allows you to confirm the test is working properly regardless of the presence of HIV antibodies.

The test is performed using blood collected from a fingertip. The blood is placed in container 1 to be diluted and then poured into the test well. HIV antibodies present in the sample are captured by the test dot, and the control dot confirms the test is working properly. The contents of container 2 are then added, which reacts with the captured antibodies, producing a blue dot in the control dot and, if HIV antibodies are present, also in the test dot. Finally, to make the dots more visible, the contents of container 3 are added.

This is a rapid test – results can be read in about 1 minute . It can detect antibodies as early as 21–22 days after potential infection , which in many cases is earlier than standard tests (which detect antibodies only after about 3 months). Clinical studies confirm the test's high accuracy and sensitivity (100%), provided it is performed correctly.

The package contains all the necessary elements to perform a single test: a test device, a buffer bottle, a dropper, a lancet, and an alcohol pad. The packaging and leaflet are in Polish and include detailed instructions for use.
