Description
Hasco Lactulosum Syrup is an over-the-counter (OTC) drug with osmotic and laxative effects. It is intended for use in case of constipation and for the prevention and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. It can be used in adults, children and infants, as well as in women during pregnancy and breastfeeding after consulting a doctor. The syrup has an orange flavor.
The active substance of the drug is liquid lactulose - a synthetic disaccharide that is easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It reaches the colon, where it is broken down mainly by bacteria of the Lactobacillus and Bacteroides families into lactic, formic and acetic acid and carbon dioxide. The resulting acids lower the pH in the colon from 7 to 5-5.5 and have a local osmotic effect, leading to increased water in the large intestine. Thanks to this fact, the fecal mass is weakened and intestinal motility is stimulated.
Liquid lactulose also helps reduce ammonia toxicity, making it useful in patients with hepatic encephalopathy. As it breaks down, it creates acids that lower the pH value in the colon and influence the conversion of ammonia into non-toxic, non-absorbable ammonium ions, which, retained in the colon, lead to lower blood ammonia concentrations.
Lactulosum Hasco can be taken with water, fruit juice or milk. It is packaged in a dark glass bottle. The bottle comes with a measuring cup that makes it easy to measure the syrup properly.
